Thakur Chandraprakash Singh (Amrish Puri) is forced by his mother to marry a second wife if his wife Sharda (Asha Parekh) gives birth to another daughter. When Sharda unexpectedly has a baby boy, Thakur believes his heir has arrived. However, unbeknownst to him, the baby is switched by Dr. Julie (Reema Lagoo), and Ruby Miranda (Farha), the real daughter, is given to an adoptive family.

Thakur's son, Vishal (Rishi Kapoor), grows up in luxury but falls in love with Ruby, not knowing she is his real sister. Thakur disapproves of their relationship, wanting Vishal to marry a girl of his own social status. After a series of emotional conflicts and misunderstandings, Thakur finally learns the truth that Vishal is not his biological son and Ruby is his own daughter. In the end, Vishal and Ruby are united, and Thakur and Sharda accept them both as their children.
