The guide Olga Petrovna Yumasheva tells about the history of the Great Tsaritsyno Palace: a monumental building with a dramatic fate.
In 1785, the Empress Catherine II came to Tsaritsyno to inspect the almost finished country residence and left dissatisfied. The halls seem cramped for her. The ceilings seem low. Ekaterina orders that the Main building, which is almost ready, be demolished to the ground and begin construction anew. The court architect Vasiliy Bazhenov is suspended from his work. The preparation of a new plan is entrusted to his apprentice, Matvey Kazakov.
