The aircraft carrier strike group is one of the military units of the United States Navy, consisting of approximately 7,500 military personnel. The strike group consists of an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer flotilla (at least two destroyers or frigates), and an aircraft carrier air group. An aircraft carrier strike group may also include nuclear-powered submarines, amphibious assault ships, and supply ships. The commander of an aircraft carrier strike group generally reports directly to the numbered fleet in that water area, and through it, carries out combat, tactical, and strategic attack missions at designated land or sea targets.
