Muons are elementary particles similar to electrons, but they are about 200 times heavier and unstable, with an average lifetime of just 2.2 microseconds before they decay into electrons, neutrinos, or other particles. They belong to the lepton family in the Standard Model of particle physics and carry a negative electric charge (though their antimatter counterpart, the anti-muon, is positively charged). Despite their short lifespan, muons are constantly created in the Earth's atmosphere when cosmic rays — high-energy particles from outer space — collide with atoms in the upper layers of the atmosphere. These collisions produce a shower of secondary particles, including pions, which quickly decay into muons. Due to their high energy and relativistic speeds (close to the speed of light), muons can travel through several kilometers of matter — including rock and even entire mountains — without being absorbed, making them useful for scientific applications like imaging the interior of pyramids, volcanoes, and even nuclear reactors. Muons are also crucial in precision tests of the Standard Model, especially since recent experiments (like Muon g−2 at Fermilab) have observed behavior that slightly deviates from theoretical predictions, possibly hinting at unknown physics beyond our current understanding.
