Madhya Pradesh to Introduce Death Penalty for Forced Religious Conversions: CM Mohan Yadav

Bhopal: In a significant policy announcement on International Women’s Day, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav declared that his government is set to introduce a law enforcing the death penalty for those found guilty of forced religious conversions. The announcement aligns with the BJP’s continued crackdown on what they term as ‘love jihad’ and forced conversions.

Strict Measures Against Forced Conversions

Addressing an event dedicated to women’s empowerment, CM Mohan Yadav emphasized that the state government is committed to protecting women from coercion and exploitation.

“Our government is very strict against those who commit atrocities against our innocent daughters. We won’t spare those who force them. Such people should not be allowed to live. Through the Religious Freedom Act, we are working to extend the provision of the death penalty to those engaging in forced conversions,” said Yadav.

Madhya Pradesh already has stringent laws against illegal conversions. The Religious Freedom Act, passed on March 8, 2021, imposes up to 10 years of imprisonment and hefty fines for those found guilty of forcing religious conversion through coercion, fraud, or misrepresentation. The law further states that any marriage performed under false pretenses of religion will be declared void.

Opposition and Political Debate

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Congress MLA Arif Masood accused the BJP of using religion as a political tool. “Targeting a particular community has always been their habit. If a girl has been missing in Bhopal for three days, our priority should be to find her, not to alter the Constitution for political gains,” said Masood.

Similar laws against forced conversions exist in BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also initiated a panel to explore legislative measures to curb forced religious conversions.

Legal Framework and Provisions

Under the existing law in Madhya Pradesh, forced religious conversions through fraudulent means—such as misrepresentation, threats, or undue influence—are punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years along with a fine of ₹50,000. The law further mandates that any individual seeking to change their religion must apply to the district administration 60 days in advance. Additionally, the converted individual’s family members, including parents and legal guardians, have the right to file complaints in such cases.

Women-Centric Initiatives on Women’s Day

Marking International Women’s Day, CM Mohan Yadav symbolically handed over the operations of his office in Bhopal to women. His security arrangements were managed by women police officers, and his official vehicle was driven by a woman chauffeur.

“On the occasion of Women’s Day, I have entrusted all the responsibilities of my office, including driving and security, to women. The state government continues to run various schemes aimed at empowering women, setting an example for others,” Yadav said during his address.

Impact and Future Implications

The proposed amendment to the Religious Freedom Act could be one of the strictest legislations against forced religious conversions in India. While supporters argue that it will serve as a deterrent against exploitation, critics warn that it could be misused to target specific communities.

As the debate over religious conversion laws intensifies, the nation will be closely watching how Madhya Pradesh implements this proposed legal amendment and its long-term impact on social harmony.
