This journey took me to Mawlamyine, a city where solo travel for tourists is strictly prohibited! Travelers must obtain official permission from the Myanmar government and carry all required documents before being allowed to enter. The primary reason behind this restriction is the ongoing instability in the surrounding areas, making access to this city a challenge.
The route from Yangon to Mawlamyine is heavily monitored, with numerous security checkpoints along the way. I had to pass through military checkpoints repeatedly, where officers thoroughly inspected my documents, checked my passport, and questioned me about my travel details. Even though I had all the necessary permits, the strict security measures made the journey feel tense and overwhelming.
Along the way, I captured the changing scenery and stopped to try local food, showcasing the stark contrast in culinary culture between Mawlamyine and Yangon. Despite the restrictions, street food remains affordable, offering insight into the everyday lives of the locals.
Although Mawlamyine is a significant economic and historical city, getting there is far from easy. After traveling almost the entire day, I finally arrived at my hotel, completely exhausted. This city holds many untold stories waiting to be explored, but just reaching it feels like a “test of endurance” for any traveler like me.
