पपीता उष्ण एवं उपोष्ण क्षेत्र का महत्वपूर्ण फल है। यह कैरीकेसी कुल का पौधा है। भारत में बहुत ठंडे क्षेत्रों को छोड़ कर सभी स्थानों में इसकी खेती की जा सकती है।
कच्चा पपीता सब्जी बनाने के उपयोग में आता है वही दूसरी ओर पका फल सीधे खाने के लिये उपयोग किया जाता हैं।
पपीता एक बहुलिंगीय पौधा है - नर, मादा एवं उभयलिंगी।नर पुष्प परागण का कार्य करते हैं। इसमें फल नही लगते हैं।प्रमुख रूप से पपीते की दो प्रकार की किस्में उपलब्ध हैं। डायोशियस-जिसमें नर व मादा पौधे अलग-अलग होते है। गाइनोडायोशियस इसमें नर व मादा भाग एक ही फूल में पाये जाते हैं। ये दोनों प्रकार के पौधे जब फूल आरम्भ होता है तभी पहचान में आते हैं।

The fruit has a wide variety of forms, its shape and size vary depending on the variety and type of plant.
If you’re growing papaya you must know that papayas come in three sexes: Male, female and hermaphrodite (bisexual). Male papaya trees must be eliminated as they don’t produce fruits. Female papaya trees require male tree for pollination. In orchards and papaya plantations, generally, 1 male tree per 10 female trees is grown. Bisexual papaya trees are self-pollinating and don’t require male trees for pollination. Buy seeds from quality source so that you know what you’re buying and to get a self-fertile bisexual tree.
The optimum temperature for growing papaya ranges between 68 – 86 F (20 to 30 C). The papaya needs plenty of sun due to its high photosynthetic activity. It is impossible to grow it in the lack of sunlight.Drainage is crucial in papaya cultivation. Soil should be rich and fertile.Papayas are heavy feeders. Apply plenty of manure or compost regularly near the base of your plant.
