Singkawang, is derived from Hakka dialect “San Khew Jong”, because of its geographical location, located between mountain, estuary, and sea
Historically, the city was originally discovered by a group of business man and miners who wanted to go to Monterado. Most of these people are Hakka people from southern China.
After several years, they settled down one by one, and this place became the gathering place of Hakka people. Today, their descendants still live in Singkawang, and their Hakka culture is still well preserved. They live in peace with the local Dayak and Malay ethnic groups, and work together to develop the economy and build a harmonious society.
