اتصال کوتاه (به انگلیسی: Short Circuit) (گاهی به خلاصه S/C) مداری است که اجازه میدهد جریان از یک مسیر ناخواسته گذر کند. در اصل به خاطر مواجه شدن با مسیری با امپدانس یا مقاومت کم (یا هیچ).[۱][۲] مخالف این وضعیت در برق مدار باز است که به معنای مقاومت بی‌نهایت بین دو گره است. اصطلاح اتصالی نیز به معنای اتصال کوتاه است، اما معمولاً به اشتباه برای هر گونه اشکال برقی به کار گرفته می‌شود.
اتصال کوتاه ارتباطی غیرعادی میان دو گره با ولتاژهای متفاوت است. این منجر به گذر جریان الکتریکی بیش‌از اندازه می‌شود که تنها توسط مقاومت معادل تونن مدار محدود می‌شود و می‌تواند منجر به آسیب مدار، گرمای بیش‌از اندازه، آتش یا انفجار (سیم یا قطعات) گردد.[۳] برخلاف اتصال کوتاه‌های معمول که به خاطر خطا رخ میدهد، در مواردی یک مدار برای ایجاد اتصال کوتاه و محافظت طراحی می‌شود.
در تحلیل مدار، اتصال کوتاه اتصالی است که دو گره را اجبار به هم‌پتانسیل شدن می‌کند. در اتصال کوتاه ایده‌آل مقاومتی و در نتیجه افت ولتاژی در طول ارتباط وجود نخواهد داشت. اما در عمل این اتصال کوتاه تقریباً بدون امپدانس است. در این حالت شارش جریانی با مقاومت باقی مدار محدود می‌شود.
A short circuit (sometimes abbreviated to short or s/c) is an electrical circuit that allows a current to travel along an unintended path with no or very low electrical impedance. This results in an excessive current flowing through the circuit. The opposite of a short circuit is an "open circuit", which is an infinite resistance between two nodes.
A short circuit is an abnormal connection between two nodes of an electric circuit intended to be at different voltages. This results in an electric current limited only by the Thévenin equivalent resistance of the rest of the network which can cause circuit damage, overheating, fire or explosion. Although usually the result of a fault, there are cases where short circuits are caused intentionally, for example, for the purpose of voltage-sensing crowbar circuit protectors.
In circuit analysis, a short circuit is defined as a connection between two nodes that forces them to be at the same voltage. In an 'ideal' short circuit, this means there is no resistance and thus no voltage drop across the connection. In real circuits, the result is a connection with almost no resistance. In such a case, the current is limited only by the resistance of the rest of the circuit.
