He is the first high-ranking security officer to be arrested following Bashar al-Assad’s escape and may be the first in a series of security officials to face justice in the ongoing and forthcoming transitional justice process. Can we compare Atef Najib—the cousin of Bashar al-Assad (Sunni by father, Alawite by mother)—whose actions sparked a Syrian revolution that, after fourteen years, crushed Bashar’s regime, to Yahya Sinwar’s actions in the October 7th attack? Yes, we can—otherwise, how could Hamas reconcile with Assad after previously opposing him? Atef’s actions ignited a revolution that ultimately succeeded, whereas Yahya Sinwar’s attack unleashed a bloody fire that led Hamas to its downfall, despite Khamenei’s claims that Gaza had triumphed over America. What matters here is affirming that the Syrian reaction to the arrest of the children was immense, just as their response to the arrest of Atef Najib has been—viewing it as the first episode in the series of Syria’s transitional justice.
