♥Yusumizugaura Terraced Fields
Around the end of the Edo period, there was little land suitable for rice cultivation in coastal areas, so people cultivated the slopes of mountains as fields and cultivated grains to obtain food. From the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period, sericulture business flourished and mulberry trees began to be cultivated. Until the mid-Meiji period, the land was a dirt bank. Due to the war, the field changed from mulberry to sweet potato, but since the 1950s, the potatoes with the fastest harvest in Japan have been grown. Selected as one of the 100 beautiful village landscapes in Japan by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. (Refer to the website of the Association for Protecting the Terraced Fields)
♥Aquaculture industry in Uwakai
The Kuroshio Current from the Pacific Ocean constantly flows into the Uwakai Sea, which has a small annual difference in water temperature and is rich in plankton.
In addition, along the coast of Uwakai where steep slopes continue, phytoplankton contained in the forest soil is washed in by rain, and small fish gather in search of food. The rias coast has deep water and is suitable for aquaculture. Red sea bream, striped jack and yellowtail are mainly farmed.
