दक्षाची मुलगी सती उमाचे शंकराशी म्हणजेच रुद्राशी लग्न झाले. काही काळानंतर दक्षाने महायज्ञ केला. त्याने शंकराला व उमाला बोलावले नाही. त्याने यज्ञात सर्व देवांसमोर शंकराची निंदा केली. उमा न बोलावता तिथे गेली. तिचाही दक्षाने अपमान केला. रागारागाने तिने याज्ञाकुन्दात उडी घेवून आहुती दिली. पुढे तिने हिमालयाच्या पोटी जन्म घेवून ताप केले व पुन्हा शंकराशी लग्न केले.
