6,500만 년 전 그 날 이후,
지구에서는 새를 제외한 모든 공룡이 사라졌습니다.
그리고 육식 공룡들의 빈 자리를
빠르게 채워나갔던 건
다름 아닌 공포새였습니다.
일명 테러 버드(Terror bird)라고 불리는 공포새는
특정 종이 아니라 ‘공포새과(Phorusrhacidae)’에 속하는
육식성 새를 총칭하는 말로,
못해도 20종이 넘었고,
작게는 키가 1m에 불과한(?) 녀석부터
키가 무려 2~3m에 달하는
켈렌켄(Kelenken guillermoi) 같은
거대 공포새도 있었죠.
도대체 이들은 어떻게 사냥을 했고,
또 얼마나 무서웠으며,
왜 멸종했을까요?
