This practice is called calf and toe pumping. When you perform calf pumps, you contract and relax the calf muscles. This action squeezes the veins in your lower legs, which helps push blood back up towards the heart. Veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward, so when the calf muscles contract, they act like a pump, pushing blood through the veins.
Since the blood in the lower extremities has to work against gravity to return to the heart, the calf muscles play a crucial role in assisting this process. The contraction of the calf muscles helps overcome the effects of gravity, preventing blood from pooling in the lower legs.
Pooling of blood in the lower legs can occur when you sit or stand for extended periods. Calf pumping exercises keep the blood moving, preventing blood pool in the lower legs, which can reduce the risk of developing conditions like varicose veins.
The rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the calf muscles helps push more oxygen-rich blood into the muscles and surrounding tissues. This increased circulation delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the cells, promoting better muscle and overall leg health.
Regular calf pumping exercises can help reduce swelling in the legs by improving lymphatic drainage and venous return. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who experience edema (swelling) due to poor circulation or prolonged sitting/standing.
