Afghanistan—an ancient crossroads of empires, invaders, and cultures—has long been a place of both breathtaking beauty and heartbreaking struggle. From the towering peaks of the Hindu Kush to the vibrant bazaars of Kabul, this land holds an allure that defies its reputation. But beneath its stunning landscapes lies a history marred by conflict and resilience.
Over the next few days we venture in from the infamous Torkham border to find out about this amazing country: its turbulent past marked by wars—from the Soviet invasion to the US-led intervention—and its present under Taliban rule. The Taliban, now navigating governance after two decades of insurgency, are a controversial yet fascinating force. Known for their strict policies, they’ve also shown unexpected moments of generosity. But their actions are far from unblemished, as ongoing challenges with women’s rights, education bans, and global isolation continue to spark outrage.
Yet, Afghanistan is so much more than its struggles. Its culture is a rich tapestry woven with poetry, music, and of course carpets! Rather than its current reputation I hope to make Afghanistan known for it's unmatched hospitality—welcoming strangers into their homes with open arms, even amidst hardship.
This is a country of extremes: beauty and brutality, resilience and repression, hope and hardship. Come along as we uncover the complexities of Afghanistan—a nation that refuses to be defined by its challenges alone.
