128th year celebration of the Thiruchendur Kavadi Kettu Festival, a historic event that has been an integral part of our community since 1897.
Every year, on the first day of the Maasi Festival at Thiruchendur, the devotees and people of our society from Colachel come together to embark on a sacred pilgrimage to the Thiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy Temple, carrying the Kavadi filled with sesame oil for the abishekam.
This journey is not just a physical one; it’s a spiritual endeavor showcasing the deep devotion, unity, and faith of our entire community. Devotees and society members alike walk barefoot, traveling from Colachel to Thiruchendur without any form of transport, a practice that sets our heritage apart.
⭐️🚩The first Kavadi to travel from Kanyakumari to Thiruchendur was ours, and today, around 500+ Kavadi make the journey annually, but only three, including ours, return by foot.🚩
In addition to the traditional Kavadi, our community has also carried the Paal Kavadi to Thiruchendur Murugan. That Paal Kavadi is not simply filled with milk; it holds a mysterious and miraculous significance. After three days of carrying it, when the Kavadi kalasam is opened, the milk inside should not have turned into curd, it needs remain in its original state form. This extraordinary event has happened twice, further deepening our faith and belief in the divine power of Lord Subramaniya Swamy.
Along the way, we perform sacred rituals, including the abishekam for Lord Subramaniya Swamy and the Valabhai Vinayakar at the temple. On the seventh day, we host the Maha Anadhanam, a selfless offering of food to the devotees of Lord Murugan at Thiruchendur.
This festival, celebrated for 128 years, is a beautiful testament to our faith, heritage, and the strength of our community. Join us as we honor this sacred tradition that has been passed down through generations.
