Today, let me take you to my parents' home in the Mekong Delta. This time of year, right before Lunar New Year, is my absolute favorite—it’s the most joyful season. The two bougainvillea trees I bought for my parents last year are now thriving, bursting with bright blossoms and growing to nearly twice their size. My parents love taking care of their plants. Every day, they water them, trim the leaves, and nurture them with so much care. It reminds me of a scene from Crash Landing on You, where they said plants thrive when cared for with love and spoken to with kind words. I’m starting to believe it’s true, haha. Today, I’m making chè khúc bạch (a Vietnamese dessert) for everyone. I had to set up my little table next to the bougainvillea to show it off because it’s just so pretty 😄. My chè khúc bạch-making skills might be a bit rusty— the last time I made it was about five years ago! But it turned out delicious, so I think you’ll forgive the imperfections, hehe. I started by mixing milk, cream cheese, whipping cream, and gelatin to create the base. Then, I poured it into molds to cool and set in the fridge. Meanwhile, I toasted some almond slices to golden perfection. My dad spent the morning in the yard, checking on the apricot blossoms that we pruned yesterday. The buds are just starting to bloom—getting ready to welcome the new year. While waiting for the khúc bạch to set, we had breakfast together as a family. This morning, my mom made chicken porridge. Her cooking is legendary— I’ve been eating it since I was little, and it never gets old. One day, I’ll make a video just to show you how amazing it is. Our family has three siblings— my older sister, me, and our youngest brother. All of us live and work far from home, so we plan our trips back together to visit our parents on weekends. The house feels so lively when everyone’s here. We laugh and chat nonstop at every meal—it’s such a special time. Later, I went to the garden to pick pandan leaves that my mom planted. I simmered them with rock sugar to make a fragrant syrup for the chè. The aroma of pandan is so comforting—it always reminds me of homemade desserts. I also peeled some longans to use as a topping. When everything was ready, I cut the khúc bạch into cubes, added the longans, lychees, and almond slices, and poured over the pandan syrup. Finally, it was time to enjoy! My mom also has a small vegetable garden. She grows everything without any chemicals, and it makes her so happy. Whenever someone visits, she proudly shares some vegetables with them. She always says she’s growing them for us to take back to the city, but since we’re often busy, the garden ends up feeding the whole neighborhood instead 😄. Sometimes, she sends me photos of her lush greens, or updates about how my dad built a new trellis for her Malabar spinach. Even the little things, like a bumper crop of chilies, make her so excited. These small updates always make me smile. It reminds me of Reply 1988, one of my favorite dramas that I’ve rewatched three times. In one of the final episodes, when Jung-Hwan visits home as an adult, his parents see him off and remind him to take care. The line that brought me to tears was: "Children grow up to be guests in their parents' house." As we grow older and build lives of our own, our time with our parents inevitably becomes less frequent. Though our love for them is just as strong, it’s not like when we were kids—when they were our whole world. Now, even their scoldings feel rare, replaced by gentle words of advice. Every goodbye isn’t just until the end of the school day; it’s often two weeks or even a month before we return again. How many more times will we get to visit them like this?
