ROUTE: ABERDEEN - LERWICK
OPERATOR: NORTHLINK FERRIES
VESSEL: mv HROSSEY
COST: £39.50 foot passenger + £18.00 pod (2024)
The longest ferry service operated within the UK operates between Aberdeen - Lerwick and is provided by Northlink Ferries. The north isles ferry services were provided by P&O Scottish Ferries. The ferry services were put out to tender in 1999. A joint venture between Caledonian MacBrayne and The Royal Bank of Scotland, named NorthLink Orkney and Shetland Ferries, won the contract and began operation in October 2002.
I took the 1700 sailing service from Aberdeen on Saturday 29th June due to arrive in Lerwick at 0700 on Sunday 30th. Be aware that in the summer this route is very popular and booking is essential if your planning on taking a vehicle.
Check-in opens 120 minutes prior to departure at Aberdeen and Lerwick. Check-in closes 30 minutes prior to departure at all ports and if you have not checked in at least 30 minutes prior to departure you will not be allowed on board. Car drivers are recommended to check-in at least 1 hour prior to departure.
The vessel taking me up to Shetland is mv Hrossey. The Orkney mainland was once called Hrossey which means horse island. The ferry has a capacity for 600 passengers and 125 cars. She was constructed by Aker Finnyards and entered service 2002.
The Magnus Lounge is located on Deck 6. Premium or Executive cabin passengers gain admission as part of their cabin price. Entry can be purchased on board by speaking to the Lounge Manager at Reception on Deck 5. It opens from boarding to midnight and reopens from 0630-0830 in Lerwick for breakfast. In 2024, the cost to access the lounge was £20.
Caledonian MacBrayne formed a company named NorthLink Ferries Limited, which adopted the branding and vessels of its predecessor, and began operating the Northern Isles ferry services on 6 July 2006. In 2011/12 the ferry service was re-tendered as NorthLink Ferries Limited's contract came to an end. The tender was given to Serco in 2012.
