This video is about the century prior to the Act of Verlatinghe in 1581 with which a number of provinces of the Habsburg Netherlands declared their independence. We start the story with Mary of Burgundy and see how in the course of the 16th century the rulers of the Netherlands became increasingly alienated from the population and at the same time the desire for independence grew among that population. The Eighty Years' War and the creation of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands were the result.
