Route 157 is a general national highway that runs from the intersection of Routes 159, 249, 304, and 305 in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, through Nonoichi City, Hakusan City, Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, Ōno City, and Motosu City, Gifu Prefecture, to the intersection of Routes 21, 22, 156, and 248 in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture.
The route passes through southern Ishikawa Prefecture, the Ōno Basin in eastern Fukui Prefecture, and western Gifu Prefecture from north to south along the western foot of the Hakusan Mountains, connecting the Hokuriku and Tokai economic zones in the shortest possible distance.
It is sometimes called a "KOKUDŌ (bad road)" because of the danger of falling rocks and collapses.
The road is also vulnerable to natural disasters, and was closed for a long period of time due to a rock fall
that occurred in Neo, Motosu City, from November 2005 to the end of October 2012.
The Nukumi Pass section of the road was once closed with a sign that read, "Dangerous! If you fall, you will die!"
warning the general public and giving dreams and hopes to road lovers, but these signs were removed in 2018.
