According to the Puranas, when Sati burnt herself after being insulted in the yagya of her father Daksha, then the enraged Lord Shiva was carrying her mortal remains through the sky. During this, Sati's navel fell on the Annapurna peak. Since then, that place has been recognized as Purnagiri Shaktipeeth. In Samvat 1321, when Shrichand Tiwari of Gujarat came to the shelter of Chand King Gyan Chand of Champawat after the atrocities of the Yamans, one night in his dream, Mother Purnagiri ordered him to build a temple at the place where the navel had fallen. Then Shrichand Tiwari established the temple here in 1632 and since then worship started here.
Thuligad----- is the first stop of the Dham. After reaching Tanakpur, the devotees take bath in the holy Sharda river and reach Thuligad, the first stop 8 km away. At this place, a feast is organized by religious people.
Baba Bhairavnath is the gatekeeper of the mother----Before reaching the Shakti Peeth, Baba Bhairavnath resides in the Bhairav temple. He stands as the gatekeeper of the mother. Only after his darshan, one gets permission to have darshan of the mother. Here the Dhuni (fire place) remains lit throughout the year. Baba Bhairav is also considered to be Hanuman's charioteer and Shiva's Kaal form.
The journey is completed by visiting Siddhababa----A Siddha Baba had established his ashram on a high peak in the temple of Purnagiri. It is said that he reached there when the mother was bathing in the river. Angered by this, the goddess threw Siddhababa across the Sharda river to Nepal. Later, when the goddess came to know that he was a devotee, she told him that the journey of the devotees will be complete only when they visit you too. Siddhababa's temple is situated in Brahmadev of Nepal. After visiting Mother Purnagiri, the devotees bow their head in the Siddhababa temple.
The false temple--The false temple of Maa Purnagiri Dham is also worshipped. It is said that a businessman had pledged to offer a golden temple in the court of the mother after getting a son, but after the wish was fulfilled, due to greed, that businessman built a temple by gilding copper. When the labourers were taking that temple towards the Dham, that temple could not be lifted from there after resting. Since then it is known as the false temple. After darshan of Maa Purnagiri, devotees also worship in this temple.
The area around Purnagiri has also been the workplace of British hunter Jim Corbett. In 1929, while hunting a man-eating tiger, Jim Corbett had a divine vision of a beam of light near the Purnagiri temple.
