Historically known as "Zibei," Wenchang has a 2,100-year history dating back to the Western Han Dynasty. Renowned as the "Hometown of Culture" for its emphasis on education, it produced 16 imperial scholars during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Wenchang Confucius Temple, initially built during the Northern Song Dynasty (1042-1048) and renovated multiple times, showcases Ming-Qing architectural styles across 3,300 square meters. It is the largest and most intact Confucian temple in Hainan, featuring iconic structures like the "Virtue Matches Heaven and Earth" archway and the Lingxing Gate. As the "Hometown of Overseas Chinese," over 1.2 million Wenchang natives reside abroad, primarily in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, contributing significantly to local infrastructure, education, and cultural exchanges through remittances and investments.
