Line infantry first appeared in the late 17th century. In the early 17th century, King Gustav II of Sweden decided to arm his army with spring-loaded firearms, but only the cavalry was equipped with this complex weapon. His tactics during the Thirty Years' War are considered to be the forerunners of line tactics, but its development still took shape until the end of the world. Some time after his death, Swedish infantry were armed with new spring-loaded muskets, which were lighter and easier to fire than the old ones, and did not require additional aids. In addition, the new muskets required less iron to make, which meant that they were cheaper when mass-produced. The emergence of this firearm made it possible to create line infantry, which required large numbers of muskets.
