In this lesson, you will learn about the laws of logarithms, how to use them, and why they are important when simplifying logarithmic expressions. There are five central laws of logarithms (logs) that are used when simplifying problems. The first two laws state that an exponential function and a log function with the same base cancel each other. This is helpful when solving exponential and log equations.

The remaining three log laws tell us what to do when we multiply, divide, and raise expressions to an exponent inside of a logarithm. Multiplication becomes addition of logarithms. Division becomes subtraction of logs. We can pull any exponent inside of a log to the outside of the logarithmic expression.
