Dennis Potter, the son of a coal miner who grew up in a village between the Severn and the Wye, returns home to the Forest of Dean after spending three years as a student at Oxford. He recalls a place that at varying stages of his life enthused and appalled him, and upon his return he finds himself somewhat conflicted. He acknowledges that the modernity that he once craved as a teenager is slowly creeping into his former home, but has grown to respect and admire the old customs and culture that it is replacing.
Dennis describes the changes he sees both in the life of the village and its residents, and in his own relations with his family and friends.
