Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo., won his second consecutive tournament in the $150,000 Johnny Petraglia Open at Carolier Lanes. He turned back fourth-seeded Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan., 244-234, to claim the $27,000 first prize and earned his 17th PBA title and first back-to-back triumph. Both players began the championship game with spares, but Weber came back with a double and then opened in his fourth frame. Benoit struck, spared, and then tripled before leaving a critical 7-10 split in the seventh, while Weber was mounting a six-bagger. A closing five-bagger by Benoit couldn't keep Weber from collecting the inaugural Johnny Petraglia Open, named after the PBA Hail of Famer who also is the house pro at Carolier Lanes. Benoit flirted with becoming the first player in PBA's history of televised tournaments to toss a second perfect game (his first came in his Initial appearance In a championship round In the 1988 Quaker State Open), when he opened his second game with nine consecutive strikes, before leaving a 10-pin. The ABC Sports televised finals began before a huge crowd with Benoit defeating fifth-seeded David Traber, Woodstock, Ill., 182-165. In pursuit of his second career $100,000 perfect game bonus from True Value Hardware Stores, he next downed Norm Duke, Forth Worth, Texas, 275-244. In the semifinal game, Benoit defeated Charlie Tapp of Kalamazoo, Mich., 223-215. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND Pos.
