The Herculaneum papyri are carbonized scrolls from the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum. Reading the fragile scrolls requires multiple scientific steps that starts with a modeling process to transport them in cases that match their exact shape. Next, the scrolls are subjected to an extremely high-resolution X-ray with a photon beam. Can these scientists do what seems impossible? Reading the inside of an ancient scroll without opening it?
