The new 2018 A5 Sportback adds hatchback utility to Audi’s A5 family and will offer competition to BMW’s 4 Series Gran Coupe and the also-new Buick Regal GS and Kia Stinger. It’s the cheapest A5 offered by Audi, but it’s also available in a sportier and more expensive S5 version, and rumors suggest an even more performance-oriented RS 5 may join the lineup in the future. Chris Wardlaw enjoyed testing the A5 Sportback almost as much as he did the 2017 Audi A4, which features the same engine and a similarly luxurious interior.
The A5 Sportback features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque that manages to generate peak horsepower or torque across much of its rev range. That power ensures drivers will enjoy the feel of piloting the A5 Sportback, and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit should make sure they’ll enjoy the look as well, providing a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and navigation screen that can be tailored to meet individual driver preferences.
