A fire festival in which more than 2,000 white-clad climbers run down a steep hill with torches in hand.
It is an annual festival of Kamikura Shrine, which is a sub-shrine of Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three Kumano Sanzan shrines, and has a tradition of Kumano Yamabushi since ancient times. This is a fire festival in which a man, dressed in white and tied with a rough rope, runs down the steep stone steps from the summit of Mt. Kamikura, holding a torch containing a sacred fire. This festival was started as a baptism of fire, and the torrent of flame scatters patches of fire in the darkness. Approximately 2,000 children dressed in white clothes with rough ropes wrapped around their bodies receive the sacred fire from pentagonal pyramidal torches and pray for the safety of their families for the coming year. This is a unique festival where you run down 538 steep stone steps.
