The dancers and musicians gathered in front of JR Tokushima Station, while the streets were packed with Awaodori fans. The long-awaited Tokushima Awaodori has finally begun! The dancers' chant, "Come to Tokushima this Obon, where the streets swirl with Awaodori," perfectly captures the excitement of this Obon season's Awaodori.
Awaodori (Awa Dance) is one of the most famous traditional performing arts in Japan, with its history of more than 430 years. "Awa" is the old feudal administration name for Tokushima Prefecture, and "odori" means "dance". Awaodori Festival in Tokushima City is held from August 12 to 15, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.
