『川越まつりの由来』
川越祭りの由来は、1648年に川越藩主の松平信綱が氷川神社に神輿や獅子頭などの祭礼用具を寄進し、江戸の天下祭にならって神幸祭を興したことに始まります。
川越まつりは、神社の神事祭典と、氏子である十ヶ町が中心になって行う附け祭りからなっています。江戸の赤坂山王祭や神田祭の影響を強く受けて発展し、江戸の祭の華を現代に伝えています。川越まつりの特徴は、豪華な飾り付けの山車です。江戸型山車に唐破風つき回り舞台構造が加わった川越独特の山車で、歴史的な蔵造りの街中を引き回されます。山車がすれ違うと向き合ってお互いにお囃子と踊りを披露し合い、周りの人たちは提灯を振り上げて歓声をあげます。これを「ひっかわせ」といい、お祭りの中でも一番の盛り上がりどころとなっています。
川越まつりは、2016年にユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されています。

The origin of the Kawagoe Festival
The origin of the Kawagoe Festival dates back to 1648, when Matsudaira Nobutsuna, the lord of Kawagoe, donated festival equipment such as a portable shrine and a lion's head to Hikawa Shrine, and established a Shinko Festival modeled on the Tenka Festival in Edo.
The Kawagoe Festival consists of a Shinto ritual ceremony at the shrine and a Tsuke Festival, which is held mainly by the ten towns that are the shrine's parishioners. It developed under the strong influence of the Akasaka Sanno Festival and Kanda Festival in Edo, and conveys the splendor of Edo festivals to the present day. The distinctive feature of the Kawagoe Festival is the gorgeously decorated floats. These floats, unique to Kawagoe, are Edo-style floats with a rotating stage structure added, and are pulled through the historic warehouse-style town. When the floats pass each other, they face each other and perform music and dances to each other, and the people around them raise their lanterns and cheer. This is called "Hikkawase" and is the most exciting part of the festival.
Kawagoe Festival was registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2016.
