On September 5, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed at a routine press conference that the Chinese government has adjusted its international adoption policy. As of August 28, aside from cases where “foreigners come to China to adopt collateral relatives within three generations or stepchildren,” no other international adoptions will be processed. This essentially means the door to international adoption is now largely closed.
Why is China doing this? Is it an effort to rescue the collapsing birth rate?
