當 The Sound of Music 在波士頓試演時，理查·羅傑斯 （Richard Rodgers） 認為主角 Captain von Trapp 奧國上校應該有一首歌來告別他所熟悉和熱愛的奧地利。羅傑斯和漢默斯坦二世 (Oscar Hammerstein II ) 決定寫一首額外的歌曲，Captain von Trapp 將在演出結束時的音樂節中演唱。在他們寫這首歌的時候，他們覺得這首歌也可以利用當時演員Theodore Bikel 的吉他演奏和民歌天賦。
很多人以為它是一首奧地利民歌或國歌，事實上只是音樂劇作品。
