Wayne State University held its tribute to the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on Friday, January 17, 2025 in the Hilberry Gateway Performing Arts Center.
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the WSU MLK Tribute and the 60th anniversary of the historic Selma to Montgomery voting rights march led by Dr. King. Rev. Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, a prophetic pastor, passionate leader, social activist and educator, was the program’s keynote speaker. Dr. Haynes spoke about the significance of the Selma march and the Civil Rights movement.
The tribute featured performances by the Detroit PAL Cheerleaders, Wayne State University Freedom Players and Social Justice Theatre Ensemble, and the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences Show Choir. The Dr. Arthur L. Johnson Community Leadership Award was also presented posthumously to Dr. William F. Pickard and accepted by his daughter, Mary. Former U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow was the recipient of the Warrior Strong Distinguished Service Award.
