On 21 January 2025, a coalition of 22 Democratic-leaning states, led by California and New York, filed lawsuits against US President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship. The order, signed on 20 January, reinterprets the 14th Amendment to deny citizenship to individuals born in the US if their mother was unlawfully present or on a temporary visa and their father was not a US citizen or lawful permanent resident. Critics, including legal experts and civil rights groups, argue the order is unconstitutional as the amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born on US soil. California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the action "un-American" and vowed to challenge it in court. Separately, Trump revoked protections for "sensitive areas" like schools and hospitals during immigration enforcement operations, raising fears of mass deportations. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm while preparing to handle the impact of Trump’s policies. #donaldtrump #uscitizen #usmexicoborder #worldnews n18oc_world n18oc_crux CRUX is your daily video news guide to the big events that are shaping our world.
