24 Hours In A City with NO LAWS: Meet The Locals I took a couple of my kids to spend the night in The Last Lawless City in America: Slab City. I really wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Would we be safe? Where would we stay? What would the locals be like? Is it truly lawless? In 1942 Camp Dunlap was commissioned. It was decommissioned after WW II, and vets, squatters, homeless, and others in search of freedom - or hiding from the law - started moving in. At the entrance is Salvation Mountain, a huge art project created by Leonard Knight celebrating God's love. We started at Salvation Mountain and spoke with Ron, who helps care for it. We met several locals and they all turned out to be extremely welcoming and willing to share their stories. I'm grateful to all of them for taking the time for us.
