25 Years of Fram Oil Filter Design Changes!

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Steve found a Fram Extra Guard PH16 oil filter in a quirky second hand store and just had to buy it because it was so old! This video compares that relic with a modern PH16 to see just how much has changed over the years! While there are certainly some changes, you may be surprised just how similar these two are! The old filter is in a box with the copyright year 1998, but the oil filter date code of C91332 and Allied Signal branding leads me to believe this was a filter produced about a third of the way into 1999. If you've never heard of Allied Signal (or completely forgot about them like I did) that's probably because on June 7, 1999, AlliedSignal, Inc. acquired Honeywell and took its more recognizable name. Boxes with the old branding were likely phased out shortly after, so this particular box and filter combo likely saw only a year or two of production. Interestingly, after I made this video, I discovered that it had already been done before, and WITH THE SAME PART NUMBER no less! However, the filter in that video is VERY different than mine! You can check out that video here on YouTube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlw2pgr_pjg The modern Fram PH16 is a First Brands Group LLC and/or Fram Group Operations example bought at a local chain store (not an auto parts store) with the date code A41992 (produced a little past half way through 2024) stamped on the side, much less clearly than the old filter. Copyright year on the box is 2019, so this box has been around for about five years now. • Chapters: 0:00 • What Prompted This Video 0:16 • Outside Comparison 2:22 • Cutting Open The 1999 Fram PH16 2:51 • 1999 Version First Impressions 4:43 • Cutting Open The 2024 Fram PH16 & Tool Tip 5:19 • 2024 Version First Impressions 6:22 • Weighing & Measuring Parts 9:49 • Comparing Features 10:54 • Bypass Valve Design & Relative Oil Pressure Tangent 14:23 • Filter Media End Cap Comparison 15:12 • Additional Observations & Thoughts 15:40 • Introducing: Oil Filters Simplified!
