Aborted takeoff. I learned a valuable lesson about winter flying today. It was a frosty -5C when I got to the airfield this morning. A few broken clouds, unlimited viz, and no wind. Perfect day for flying. I pulled VXXY out of the hangar where she had been protected from the frost. I noted that all surfaces were clean and dry as I completed the DI. I climbed in, then went through my preflight checklist. Looking up I noticed it had started snowing. What should I do? Shut down or wait for the shower to pass? I could see blue sky out to the West in the direction I planned to fly so I decided to wait. The engine needed a few more minutes to get up to temperature anyway. After about 3 or 4 minutes the snow stopped, the sky cleared, Ts and Ps were good to go and the power checks were completed, so I taxied out. The ground was frozen hard so I didn’t expect a long take-off run. Full power, airspeed increasing normally but as I rotated it felt sluggish and my left wing dropped, VXXY didn’t want to fly. I was at my abort point so I closed the throttle and slammed the brakes on stopping just before the end of the runway. I taxied back to the hangar and did another power check. All normal. Then the thought stuck me, could the snow have stuck to the wing surfaces destroying the lift? I shut down and got out to have a look. The wings had a layer of snow on them, from the leading edge back to almost mid wing. I should have checked before taxying instead of assuming the slip stream would blow the flakes away. Big mistake. It could have been worse though. If I hadn’t of aborted the takeoff and instead attempted to drag her into the air, I would probably have stalled with possible fatal consequences.
