東京都心と埼玉県西部を結ぶ道路という事もあり、渋滞が激しいこの道は古くから川越街道 - 児玉街道 - 富岡街道 - 信州街道として「江戸道」「川越道」などとも呼ばれた。中山道より行程距離も短く、通行者も多かったため、五街道に準ずる脇往還として宿駅整備された（川越児玉往還）。大名などが多く利用する五街道とは違い、役人や女性が多く利用していた事から群馬県甘楽郡下仁田町のように「姫街道」と呼んでいる地域もある。長野県の一部区間は中山道となっている。
This road, which is heavily congested because it connects central Tokyo and western Saitama Prefecture, has long been called the Kawagoe Highway, Kodama Highway, Tomioka Highway, and Shinshu Highway, such as "Edo Road" and "Kawagoe Road." Since the travel distance was shorter than that of Nakasendo and there were many passersby, the post station was constructed as a side trip similar to the Five Routes (Kawagoe Kodama). Unlike the Gokaido, which is often used by daimyo, there are areas called "Himekaido" such as Shimonita-cho, Kanra-gun, Gunma Prefecture, because it was used by many officials and women. Some sections of Nagano Prefecture are Nakasendo.
