Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Allan Holdsworth Licks From 1974.
The late-great Allan Holdsworth is a guitar legend of significant influence and musical ability, as his forward-thinking and envelope-pushing musical drive set the world on its ear in the early 1970s and has never fully recovered from his extraordinary musicianship and otherworldly playing approaches.
This lesson taps into a number of ideas borrowed from a live performance from 1974 when Allan was working with the fusion group Soft Machine. The licks and ideas shared here come from the song 'Hazard Profile' and captures Allan blazing a trail of tasteful licks, phrases, and extended soloing, including a number of his trademark wide-interval phrases and string skipping legato excursions as he whips through the song. The licks shared here include the quirky single-note riff from 'Hazard Profile,' some tasty Dorian-based melodic phrases, a wide-interval string-skipping workout, and more.
There's a lot you can learn from studying the unusual ideas coming from a player as brilliantly gifted as Allan Holdsworth, and while you have your work cut out for you by tackling and experimenting with his musical territory, there's something about challenging yourself and really pushing your playing forward by attempting to perform advanced ideas like these from the masters. Allan's music came from another world and learning some of his musical habits can do wonders for your own playing, so dive into this lesson and give these ideas a few laps.
