吉隆坡全名為「吉隆坡聯邦直轄區」）是馬來西亞的首都[註1]與最大、人口最多、最密集的城市，一座對東南亞的文化、教育、體育、經濟、商業、金融等具有極大影響力的國際都市。依照全球化及世界城市研究網絡（GaWC）所公佈之《世界級城市》名單，吉隆坡被列為與洛杉磯、芝加哥、雪梨、阿姆斯特丹、多倫多等同屬於ALPHA等級的國際都會。吉隆坡也被聯合國教育、科學及文化組織選為2020年度的「世界圖書之都」（World Book Capital）。
吉隆坡地處馬來西亞半島西岸，為雪蘭莪州所環繞。吉隆坡被規劃為“吉隆坡聯邦直轄區”，為馬來西亞三個聯邦直轄區之一，由馬來西亞聯邦政府透過聯邦直轄區部直接管理。吉隆坡曾經是聯邦政府行政中心和馬來西亞聯邦法院所在地，但已於1999年遷往吉隆坡以南20公里的布城（行政首都）。目前馬來西亞的36個聯邦政府部門總部中，僅剩4個聯邦政府部門仍常駐吉隆坡。即便如此，吉隆坡仍是馬來西亞國會和國家皇宮的所在地。此外，全球十大購物中心的其中三個、全球最高的雙子星大樓—國油雙峰塔、全球第二高大樓—默迪卡118以及馬來西亞股票交易所也都座落在吉隆坡內。
吉隆坡總面積達243平方千米（94平方英里），廣義的大吉隆坡都會區則包含巴生谷地區，是一個擁有880萬人口的都會區。吉隆坡是全馬來西亞人口和經濟成長最快速的都會區，也是馬來西亞語言和人口族群最多元化的城市。依據2023年11月發布的《2023年英孚英語程度指數》，吉隆坡在母語非英語的城市中，英語熟練度指標為564分，位居全球第29名。

Kuala Lumpur (full name: "Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur") is the capital of Malaysia[Note 1] and the largest, most populous and densest city. It is an international city with great influence on culture, education, sports, economy, commerce and finance in Southeast Asia. According to the list of "World Class Cities" published by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC), Kuala Lumpur is listed as an international city of ALPHA level with Los Angeles, Chicago, Sydney, Amsterdam and Toronto. Kuala Lumpur was also selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as the "World Book Capital" for 2020. Kuala Lumpur is located on the west coast of the Malaysian Peninsula and is surrounded by the state of Selangor. Kuala Lumpur is planned as the "Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur", one of the three federal territories in Malaysia, and is directly managed by the Malaysian federal government through the Federal Territories Department. Kuala Lumpur was once the administrative center of the federal government and the seat of the Federal Court of Malaysia, but was moved to Putrajaya (administrative capital) 20 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur in 1999. Of the 36 federal government department headquarters in Malaysia, only four remain in Kuala Lumpur. Even so, Kuala Lumpur is still the seat of the Malaysian Parliament and the National Palace. In addition, three of the world's top ten shopping malls, the world's tallest twin towers - Petronas Twin Towers, the world's second tallest building - Merdeka 118, and the Malaysian Stock Exchange are also located in Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur has a total area of 243 square kilometers (94 square miles), and the broader Greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area includes the Klang Valley area, which is a metropolitan area with a population of 8.8 million. Kuala Lumpur is the fastest growing metropolitan area in Malaysia in terms of population and economy, and it is also the city with the most diverse languages and population groups in Malaysia. According to the 2023 EF English Proficiency Index released in November 2023, Kuala Lumpur's English proficiency index is 564 points among cities where English is not the native language, ranking 29th in the world.
Kuala Lumpur ranked 53rd in the 2014 Global Cities Index published by Foreign Policy, and 81st in the 2thinknow Reform Cities Index 2019, which is related to economic and social reform. According to Mastercard's 2018 Global Destination Cities Index, Kuala Lumpur has 13.79 million foreign tourists visiting each year, surpassing cities such as New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, and Taipei, ranking sixth in the world, and ranked second in the world in the 2019 Expat Cities Ranking.
