Petaling Street (Malay: Jalan Petaling; English: Petaling Street) is a street located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Various watches, clothes, jewelry and snacks are sold locally. In addition, it is also a local tourist attraction in Malaysia. Petaling Street is mainly Chinese, but unlike Chinatowns around the world, the Chinese in Malaysia have been here before the country's independence. Petaling Street is not the only place where Chinese gather, so Petaling Street cannot be called Chinatown.
There are many famous restaurants and hawker centers in the Petaling Street area, and they sell authentic Malaysian food such as Hokkien fried noodles, grilled fish, laksa and curry noodles. The hawkers are mostly Chinese, and other races include Indians, Malays and significant foreign workers.
The original Petaling Street was mainly centered on the city. The reason why Jalan Tun H. S. Lee has become increasingly popular is that it is higher and less prone to flooding. Most of the wealthier and more luxurious shophouses are built north of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, closer to the city center.
Kuala Lumpur was one of the first cities to be developed in the last century, so it has gathered many hardworking people. Most of them are Cantonese and Hakka. They came here to trade in tin rice or work in tin mines. And they were led by a Kapitan. The most famous Kapitan was Hakka Yap Ah Loy, who was also the founder of Kuala Lumpur.
In 1870, the Chinese in Malaysia broke out in internal strife and split into two secret societies, the Cantonese Ghee Xing Company and the Hakka Haishan Company. The British had to intervene to help end the conflict, but many buildings were severely damaged or burned down.
During the Selangor Civil War, these tin mines were abandoned. After the war, the miners returned to find that the mines were flooded and therefore could not work. Yap Ah Loy persuaded the miners and coolies to stay in Kuala Lumpur and make a living by growing rice and other horticultural products with the Malays in the surrounding areas. In 1880, he opened a tin powder factory in Petaling Street, which is why Petaling Street got its name. Unfortunately, the following year, in 1881, Petaling closed down.
In August 2003, in order to pay tribute to the successive prime ministers of Malaysia, Petaling Street hung huge posters of four prime ministers, including the then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. MCA president Ong Ka Ting said that these posters were a way to express appreciation for the excellent management of the country by the four prime ministers.
