In this Simply Rhino video we look at preparing a Rhino Model for 3D Printing on the @Formlabs Form 2 SLA printer.

Video content: The starting point is our Rhino3D model of a scraper and we take a look at the various steps we need to go through in order to create a successful 3D print.

The overriding principle in the first stage of the workflow is that the geometry needs to be built correctly in Rhino, before creating the mesh STL file.

We then take our valid STL file in to PreForm which is Formlabs’ print preparation software for their 3D printers. In PreForm you choose the best layout, orientation and support to ensure a successful print.

When we’re happy with our .form file (this is the file type that PreForm creates) we send this to print on the Form 2. The Form 2 prints using inverted (upside down) stereolithography (SLA) 3D print technology. SLA 3D printing uses a laser to cure solid isotropic parts from a liquid photopolymer resin. In our video we print using Formlabs Grey Resin, which is great for general purpose prototyping and design and excellent for capturing small details.

Once our print is built we go through the process of removing the print from the printer and cleaning the print on the build platform with the Form Wash. Finally we remove the print from the build platform and get to look at our final 3 printed pieces which fit together to make up our scraper.
