The Caledonian Railway is perhaps the most legendary (for lack of better words...!) of all of Scotland's railways. What is however rarely discussed is how their passenger motive power always seemed to lag behind a little, with their operations still including a single wheeler up to the last day of their existence! Today one of their earlier attempts to modernise their express fleet is up for examination - the "Cardean" 4-6-0s - and why they were not all the Caledonian is cracked up to be!
