Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Steve Evans and Bucky Miller use a home made rail bike device that allows them to ride their mountain bikes on top of the railways, travelling hundreds of kilometers over 4 days through an area with no roads to reach a remote community, the sub-arctic coast of Canada, and eventually the Arctic Ocean. Along the way they will be spending time with their Cree friends on their traditional lands. They will be hunting, fishing, and camping until they reach their destination through these remote and wild lands.

Many ask how I came up with the idea of a railbike, and to be very clear, people have been riding rails using all kinds of rail bikes for years, so I didn’t invent it, but there is a really good story behind how this all came about…many years ago I watched a group of cyclists ride to the Arctic Ocean along an ice road during the heart of winter. I embarked on a mission to get to the same area as them, but in the summer. The problem? There are no roads to get there, well, except for during the winter when they implement the ice roads. The only solid ground outside of winter to get to this community is the rail road.

At first, I had thought about riding between the tracks the entire way, but a few trial runs on a local railroad soon proved that would be impossible, and painful. I thought, what if I designed a system that would allow me to ride my bike on top of the rail. A “rail bike” of sorts. I spent 2 years and built about 13 different versions before settling on the one you see in this video. This railbike is made with simple parts, can be ridden with 1 or 2 riders, and weighs about 22 pounds. I still make small upgrades to it between trips as I learn more about it.

This was our biggest railbike trip to date. But we are planning even bigger ones in the future. There are many epic railways around the world that are begging to be ridden, and that is exactly what we will do!
