Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Growing plants that are native to your region can be one of the best things a gardener can do. In this video, I give a primer on some of the very best plants that are native to North America east of the Mississippi River. This video has plants that are great for gardens as far north as Canada, south down to the upper regions of Florida, the Mid Atlantic and East Coast regions, as well as the Midwest.

Why grow natives? Native plants are typically better suited for our soils and climates which makes them innately lower maintenance, requiring less soil amendments, fertilizer and irrigation. They also are more apt to help our native wildlife and pollinators so that our native animals can thrive. This in turn promotes a healthy foodweb and thus ecosystem. Not to mention, as natives, they naturally look good in our garden settings, fitting the energy of our locations.

After discussing the importance and benefits of growing native plants, I discuss a wide array of different plants, all of which are perennials. I touch many beautiful flowering plants, groundcovers, vines, and shrubs. While discussing I explain why we need to be aware of the Genus and species of each plant, and how to know what to look for. I also give recommendations on top performing varieties and cultivars of the plants. I provide suggestions on where to plant them in the garden, when each blooms, easy plant combinations and how we can use native plants to replace pre-existing traditional common plants such as boxwoods.
