With more powerful locomotives hauling trains these days, 4 or more locomotives hauling trains is not common anymore. Generally if you see a train with 4 locomotives, it can usually be put down to locomotive failures with rescue locomotives in the new consist, loco re balancing due to operational requirements or trains with older locomotives that have less horse power.
