Best of Venice 2025: Venice (or Venezia, Venedig, Veneto 2024) is one of the most beautiful and most famous cities in the world. In the 13th century Venice was the most prosperous city in all of Europe. The city became very rich because it had a monopoly in the Byzantine and later the Ottoman Empire to trade spices and products from the Middle East to North and Western Europe. Venice was closely related to Constantinople. Venice eventually became a European Empire (La Serenissima) with many trading posts and colonies along the Adriatic Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean. Its biggest assets - which eventually would be lost to the Turks - were the Greek islands of Crete and Cyprus.
Today Venice is a city for tourists and many Venetian left to live more comfortable at the mainland in Mestre. Venice has still around 250,000 citizens. The city has multiple renaissance and baroque buildings and hundreds of churches and basilica's. The most important one is the St Mark's Basilica. Other architectural wonders around the canals and Canal Grande are the Rialto Bridge, the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Campanile.
