There are quite a few places on the island where you can understand why Mark Twain said: "Mauritius was made first, and then Heaven, and Heaven became a copy of Mauritius." Chamarel and Gorges Viewpoint were like this during our travels, but they all dwarf Le Morne. The mountain is cruel but beautiful. The hike itself is stressful, but that wouldn't be such a problem. The entire path is made of lava stones, so they also push the heat from below. There is still shade at the beginning, but as you go up there is less and less and the sun hits you more and more. Tip: bring hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and lots of water! But the view is more than worth it! It's worth going up, because it's one of the roughest spots on the island! The video doesn't show it, but you can see the incredible bays in beautiful colors next to you. Even before the first lookout point, the famous underwater waterfall appears (which is not a real waterfall, but it looks like one from above), and it gets more and more beautiful as you go up. The mountain has a dark past. Hundreds of slaves chose death at its peak and jumped into the abyss as free men rather than return to their masters. What makes the story even sadder is that the authorities just wanted to tell him that there was no more slavery and they could come down from the top of Le Morne, nothing to worry about. This is commemorated with a metal cross on the top of the mountain. ___________________________________________________ More videos: The Majestic Gris Gris coastal walking tour: https://youtu.be/n_OJlKZ3lCw Breathtaking Waterfall hike: https://youtu.be/rdvYUfPgLRg Cap Malheureux walking lively Sunday with Christmas Fair https://youtu.be/2ze8PUBKk-Q The North beaches with drone: https://youtu.be/3xXZ2s1KpNA Port Louis (capital of Mauritius) walking tour: https://youtu.be/wibuNB3j_D8
