国土の約1割が氷河に覆われたアイスランド。氷の国は、世界有数の火山の国でもあります。毎年のように、どこかで噴火が起こっているのです。
ヴァトナヨークトル国立公園にも、いくつもの活火山があり、その上にヨーロッパ最大級の氷河が広がっています。ほとんどの火山は氷の下に隠れていますが、カルデラの一部が見えている火山もあり、火山ガスを噴き出している様子も見られます。氷河の雪解け水は、やがて集まり川となりいくつもの滝を生み、水量ヨーロッパ最大級の大瀑布も生んでいました。
Welcome to Iceland, where nearly 10% of the land is covered by glaciers, earning it the nickname, “The Land of Ice.” But Iceland isn’t just about ice; it’s also one of the most volcanic places on Earth, with eruptions happening almost yearly. Vatnajökull National Park showcases this astonishing clash of elements, hosting numerous active volcanoes beneath Europe’s largest glacier. While most volcanoes remain hidden under the ice, some reveal their calderas and emit volcanic gases. The melting snow from the glaciers feeds rivers that give birth to countless waterfalls, including Europe’s mightiest waterfall in terms of volume.
